![]() ![]() Building on the theoretical work of Russian film director Sergej Eisenstein, primarily his theory of intellectual montage, and his fascination for traditional Japanese arts, the paper synthesises Eisenstein’s work with animation theorist Thomas Lamarre’s conceptualisation of multiple layers in animation. ![]() This paper proposes a rethinking of remediation on the level of the medium, suggesting that there is a dialogue between foreground and background in Japanese animation that can be understood through the structural properties of Chinese characters. Examining remediation in the field of animation studies often leads to the hermeneutical deconstruction of narrative realities within the medium.
